Abe, an Inuit community leader in Canada, was instrumental in helping Inuit obtain surnames rather than disc numbers. He was the first Inuk to sit on the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories and was made a member of the Order of Canada for his work on the Berger Commission and Project Surname.
